A TikTok famous Dublin solicitor has been "humbled" after he was awarded an Honorary Life Membership by UCD's Law Society.
Employment law expert Richard Grogan has clocked up over 100,000 followers on TikTok with his informative videos and timeless catchphrase - "that's the law and that's a fact".
He wrote on Linkedin: "I am honoured , delighted and humbled that UCD Law Society are awarding me an Honourary Life Membership. Never in my wildest dreams did I ever even consider I might achieve this."
Richard Grogan has been sharing his legal knowledge with users on TikTok since December 2021 and has become a popular household name in such a short period of time.
Grogan’s posts have been benefiting many people with many not knowing their employment rights.
He told Dublin Live: “I’ve been recognised. It’s unusual as a solicitor that you’re walking down the road and somebody goes, ‘That’s the law and that’s a fact’.
“I was doing an Instagram post. I couldn’t do it in 30 seconds and 60 seconds was too long, so when I was getting to the end of it there was time to fill up, and when there was seven seconds of silence so I just said: ‘That’s the law and that’s a fact’.
“It wasn’t a bad phrase so I held onto that. There was no big advertising agency sitting down and working out a phrase, it just happened.
But why did Grogan want to become a solicitor and what type of work does he do?
“My mother said I’d enjoy university and I did, so I was looking at my options. Arts wasn’t one I was too keen on, commerce didn’t really get me excited and my father's best man was the professor in law in UCD,” he explained.
“I’d no idea what I wanted to do. He came over and said there’s a lot of history involved in law, I said I liked history and that was it. I was in my third year in law when I found out what was the difference between a solicitor and a barrister.
“We only do employment and personal injury work so that’s my area of expertise.”
