Dubliners reported experiencing ‘the worst thunderstorm’ they’ve ever seen on Wednesday afternoon.
A Status Orange thunderstorm warning is in place for the capital until 5pm that reads:”Further thunderstorms with intense lightning strikes with some disruption.”
Dublin is also included in a less severe Status Yellow rain warning until midnight.

Met Eireann said: “Heavy rain with embedded thunderstorms today (Wednesday) and tonight with the possibility of intense downpours, will lead to localised flooding and some disruption.”
People have been taking to social media to describe the weather conditions, with many agreeing it’s one of the worst thunderstorms they’ve ever experienced.
“Wow, this is the worst storm I've seen in Dublin in quite a while. Thunder and lightning right overhead and lashing buckets,” one person said.
Another wrote: “This is the most prolonged thunder and lightning that dublin has experienced in quite a long time”
A third added: “This is one of the longest thunder & lightning sessions I’ve experienced in Dublin. Or else it’s Armageddon. Judging on 2022 so far I’m keeping an eye out for horsemen… it’s so dark too!”
Someone else wrote:”This is the longest and loudest thunderstorm I’ve heard in Dublin in a while?”
A fifth shared:”I think that's the longest thunderstorm I've witnessed in Dublin.”
It comes as a spate of weather warnings are in place for many counties on Wednesday.
- Status Orange Rain warning - Waterford, Wexford, Wicklow until midnight
Met Eireann said: “Very heavy rain with embedded thunderstorms today (Wednesday) and tonight with the possibility of intense downpours, will lead to localised flooding. Disruption is likely.”
- Status Orange Thunderstorm warning - Dublin, Kildare, Louth, Meath, Wicklow until 5pm
Met Eireann said: “Further thunderstorms with intense lightning strikes with some distruption.”
- Status Yellow Rain warning - Carlow, Dublin, Kildare, Kilkenny, Laois, Louth, Meath, Offaly, Cavan, Monaghan, Cork, Kerry, Tipperary until midnight
Met Eireann said: “Heavy rain with embedded thunderstorms today (Wednesday) and tonight with the possibility of intense downpours, will lead to localised flooding and some disruption.”
The wet and windy weather is set to continue tonight and into tomorrow.
Giving its overall forecast for the country, Met Eireann said: “The bands of showers rain will continue to track up over the north of the country early in the night with a continued risk of localised flooding. Drier conditions with clear spells and isolated showers will push into the south early, extending to all areas later. Fresh to strong southeasterly winds will moderate overnight, remaining milder though with lowest temperatures of 9C to 13C.
“Thursday morning will be largely dry and partly cloudy with a few showers about mostly in southern coastal counties. Heavier showery outbreaks of rain will extend into the south through the late afternoon and evening. Moderate southeast winds will increase fresh to strong in the southwest. Highest temperatures of 15C to 17C degrees.
“Wet in many areas on Thursday night with outbreaks of rain, some heavy falls possible. Much of Ulster will stay dry. Quite breezy with moderate to fresh easterly winds. Lowest temperatures of 11C to 13C.”
Looking ahead to the weekend, the national forecaster added that it will remain “unsettled with rain most days”.
