Dublin pub gobsmacked as Morgan Freeman unexpectedly drops in for a drink

The owner of a popular Dublin pub - owned by some of Ireland’s biggest rugby players - was left starstruck after a visit from Hollywood A-Lister Morgan Freeman.

Pub goers in The Bridge 1859 in Ballsbridge, south Dublin were surprised when Freeman arrived in for a drink on Sunday night after MC-ing an event at UCD.

The bar is co-owned by Jamie Heaslip, Rob Kearney, Dave Kearney, and Sean O’Brien and is run by Managing Director Noel Anderson.

A star struck Noel said: "I have been a massive fan of this man over the years and love his movies. Having Morgan Freeman visit @TheBridge1859 today was definitely one of the coolest things to ever happen there."

Freeman was in Dublin to MC a special performance by the RTÉ Concert Orchestra, called The Delta Blues Project. The performance saw the orchestra play with leading jazz and blues musicians.

The Shawshank Redemption star is co-founder and co-owner of Ground Zero Blues Club in Clarksdale Mississippi, which is considered the #1 Blues Club in the world. He described the project as a “treat for all of us”.

He said: “My love of music doesn’t start and end with the blues. I also love the symphony. The talent of amazing musicians and the immersive nature that grabs you, and pulls you right in.

"So we had an idea at Ground Zero, ‘why not take the best of Delta Blues and combine it with a musical experience provided by a world class symphony’. So we did it, and this is it, the symphonic blues experience.”

The first half of the concert featured music by trumpeter Jeremy Pelt, while the second half of the concert showcased music from the Mississippi Delta and featured blues vocalist and guitar player Anthony ‘Big A’ Sherrod, as well as legendary drummer Lewis Nash and award-winning pianist Caili O’Doherty.

General Manager of the RTÉ Concert Orchestra Joe Csibi said: “It’s been a great privilege for our team and The RTÉ Concert Orchestra to produce this project and bring to Ireland the music of the Delta Blues.

"The calibre of artist and musicianship was something to behold and the marriage of this music genre with the orchestra was overwhelming! As for Morgan Freeman - we are incredibly grateful to him for his time, commitment and belief in this project."

The performance which was MCed by Freeman took place as part of UCD Festival in O’Reilly Hall at the university.
