Dublin Airport security queues: Busiest times to avoid and exact time to arrive before your flight

Some holidaymakers travelling through Dublin Airport are being faced with long queues to go through security.

On Sunday, more than 1,000 people missed their flights as queues stretched out of the building and into the car park.

Some travellers waited up to three hours just to get in the door of the airport, while gardai had to be called to control crowds.

Dublin Airport said in a statement: "Due to significant queues inside the terminal for check-in, bag drop and security, passengers queueing outside the terminal may not make their flight and may need to contact their airline to rebook. We sincerely apologise for the obvious frustration and inconvenience this may cause.

"Dublin Airport is working to ensure queuing times are minimal for all passengers, but anyone travelling from Dublin Airport today (Sunday) is advised to allow additional time. Dublin Airport apologies unreservedly to passengers for the delays encountered."

Security staffing levels are being blamed with the head of communications for daa telling RTE this morning that an additional 370 officers are due to start in July.

Dublin Airport tips to avoid security queue chaos including exact time to arrive

Dublin Airport has issued advice to passengers travelling through it in the coming weeks.

Anyone travelling on short-haul flights to Europe or the UK should arrive up to two and a half hours before their departure. However, passengers on short-haul flights taking off after 8.30am are advised not to arrive earlier than 6am.

Meanwhile, passengers on long-haul flights should get to Dublin Airport up to three and a half hours before their departure.

Security in Terminal 1 is open 24-hours, while security on Terminal 2 opens at 4am.

Where possible, passengers should check-in online in advance of travelling to the airport. Airline check-in desk and bag drop times vary, so passengers should contact their airline to confirm and plan their journey accordingly.

At the moment, peak times at security can occur in Terminal 1 between 5am to 8am for morning flights, and in Terminal 2 at 5am to 12 noon for morning and early afternoon flights. Terminal 1 has a second peak time at security between 3pm to 7pm for evening flights.

Weekends, and in particular bank holiday weekends, can be busy all day.
