DSPCA appeal to help find 'terrified' mother dog after rescuing pups from Lucan ditch

The DSPCA are appealing to the public to help find a 'terrified' mother dog after they rescued her pups from a ditch in Lucan.

The six small pups, who are around three months old, and their mam were discovered hidden in the ditch surrounded by heavy brambles in an industrial estate just off a main road in the west Dublin area. The young bunch were rescued over a period of nearly a week, but their mam ran away in a state of disorientation and has yet to be located safely.

All of the rescued puppies have been treated for the dangerous Parvovirus - which damages a dog's guts and can be fatal. Thankfully, they are all doing well after receiving immediate vet care and have been sent out to foster homes.

The DSPCA and South Dublin County Council have been out looking for their mother, and have urged the public to get in touch if she is spotted. In a thread on Twitter, they wrote: "The little family were surrounded by thick heavy brambles and fencing between an industrial estate and a busy main road in the Lucan area.

"It took three days to catch the first three puppies. The following day another two were rescued. Their mom ran off as soon as our inspector approached, completely disoriented and very stressed.

"The five rescued pups tested positive for Parvovirus and received immediate veterinary care. The last puppy was rescued the next day.

"All the pups, who are approximately three months old were treated for Parvovirus, and are thankfully doing well. They have now all gone out to foster homes for much needed human handling and interaction.

"We’ve been out several times to try and catch their mom but she is terrified of anyone approaching her. We’re working with the South Dublin County Council dog warden and the local people to help catch her.

"If you do recognise this dog please email info@dspca.ie."
