A man drunkenly attacked two security staff with glass bottles after being ejected from a city centre bar.
Joao Domingos, appeared at Liverpool Crown Court on Thursday after pleading guilty to two counts of threatening with an offensive weapon in a public place, one count of assaulting an emergency worker, and one count of causing criminal damage. Paul Blasbery, prosecuting, said on March 15, at around 1.20am in the Tom Thumb bar on Hardman Street in Liverpool city centre, Domingos was acting aggressively towards customers.
Security staff Nkoko Fidel and another male, removed the 41-year-old from the premises, but he began shouting “I will kill you”, and was described as wandering off to the other side of the road to nearby bins. He returned with two broken glass bottles retrieved from the bins, and began brandishing them towards the two men, holding one in each hand raised above his head.

Mr Fidel raised his arms above his head and managed to stop the glass making contact, but the other staff member suffered a small cut to his hand. The men barricaded themselves inside the pub, and the defendant continued to bang on the door before eventually leaving.
The members of staff then pursued and subdued Domingos while waiting for police, but he continued making threats, attempted to bite Mr Fidel and was injured in the process. After police arrived, he continued to act aggressively and as he was being escorted to a police van, he spat blood at Constable Harris’ face.
He continued to spit blood around the van which resulted in it being out of service for a period of time while it was professionally cleaned. During a police interview, Domingos answered no comment to all questions, and has no previous convictions.
Peter White, defending, highlighted that his client was previously a “human rights champion” in Angola, and this behaviour is entirely out of character for him. He said: “He specifically instructs me to apologise to everyone involved in this incident.
“The genuine remorse he feels shines through. On this occasion he had far too much to drink and behaved in a manner that was wholly unacceptable.
“Though he cannot recall much of it, he accepts he acted in this manner and accepts the spitting is disgusting.” Mr White explained that Domingos successfully sought asylum in the UK in 2015, has been employed for the majority of his time here, and has a good education.
In sentencing, Recorder David Knifton KC said: “A glass bottle which is deliberately broken and then used as a weapon is capable of causing very serious injury indeed. Your actions must also have caused serious alarm and distress to the staff and customers inside.”
He added that Domingos, of Princes Avenue, Liverpool, “clearly had a drinking problem”, but acknowledged his previous good character. Domingos was sentenced to 20 months imprisonment for the weapon charges, and a further two months to be served consecutively, for assaulting an emergency worker, totalling a prison sentence of 22 months.
