Drunk pensioner killed his dog after driving his Jaguar into beloved pet

A pensioner who drove his car over his pet pooch and killed the dog has been handed a drink driving ban.

William Levell was behind the wheel when he killed his beloved border collie in his own driveway in December 2021.

The 78-year-old had driven his Jaguar X-Type on to his driveway from the road before colliding with a parked car.

However, he then fatally reversed the car before moving forward again and in doing so hit and fatally injured his pet dog.

Levell was arrested by police on December 18 2021, after a roadside breath test revealed he was intoxicated whilst driving.

Breath tests showed Levell, of Cheddar in Somerset, was nearly twice the legal limit for alcohol, according to Coventry Live.

A spokesman for Avon and Somerset Constabulary said: “At around 9.40pm on Saturday, December 18, 2021, police attended Lower North Street, Cheddar, following a report of a collision involving a car and a dog.

“William Levell, 78, had driven his Jaguar X-Type on to his driveway from the road, colliding with a parked car.

“He then reversed before driving forward again, hitting and fatally injuring his border collie.

“He was arrested after a roadside breath test revealed him to be intoxicated.

“A subsequent breath test carried out at Bridgwater police station showed Levell to be nearly twice the legal limit for alcohol.”

At Taunton Magistrates Court on Monday January 10, Levell admitted driving a motor vehicle whilst unit through alcohol.

He was banned from driving for 17 months and ordered to pay a fine and costs of £379.

Special Constable Christopher Rees, said: “There can be no excuse for getting behind the wheel intoxicated.

“This case demonstrates the devastating consequences that driving under the influence of alcohol can have.”
