Drunk driver caused takeaway terror after smashing 4x4 into Scots restaurant

Customers fled for their lives when a drunk motorist smashed through the window of a takeaway.

Joshua Smith smashed through the front of the New Shanghai restaurant in Tayport, Fife, before coming to a stop at the counter. The 32-year-old, who was in a two-tonne 4x4, has been banned from the road.

Dundee Sheriff Court heard yesterday how people waiting for food had to run for cover when they saw Smith’s Mitsubishi Shogun Elegance speeding towards them.

Prosecutor Emma Farmer told the court: “The accused’s vehicle crashed into the front of the store through the window and came to a halt just before hitting the counter. One of the witnesses in the takeaway intervened and removed the keys from the accused’s car.

“The [person] who removed the keys could smell alcohol on his breath.”

Smith refused to give a blood sample to police after being taken to hospital. The restaurant was forced to close for a period.

Smith had his sentence deferred and was given an interim driving ban.
