A drunk dad scratched three names onto his ex-wife’s car in a “moment of madness”.
Jaspal Hunjan bumped into his ex-wife on a night out on April 1, in Glasgow, but rather than go home after hours of drinking, he got a friend to take him to her Paisley home where he “extensively” scratched the “entirety” of her car in the early hours of April 2.
The 27-year-old scratched three of his pals' names onto the bonnet and rear of his ex-wife’s red Ford Focus.
Procurator fiscal depute David Gallagher told Paisley Sheriff Court the couple had been in a relationship for 10 years and married for almost five years with the relationship coming to an end in December last year.
Mr Gallagher explained: “Around 10pm on Saturday, April 1 the complainer — the accused’s ex-wife — left her home to go into Glasgow city centre on a night out with friends.
“A witness remained in her home as she was staying there overnight. Arriving in Glasgow, the complainer noted the accused with friends in the Royal Exchange Square area.
“At 3am, the complainer left a nightclub to get a taxi home, but still aware the accused was within the same area. At 3.50am, the witness within the complainer’s home was awoken by a noise outside and contacted the complainer to check if it was her making the noise.
“The complainer stated that it wasn’t and she was just getting in a taxi. The witness then looked out the front bedroom window and saw the accused loitering outside the Fleming Street property and around the complainer’s red Ford Focus.
“Hunjan was then seen to use an unknown sharp implement and scratch round the entirety of the vehicle. The accused scratched three names on the bonnet and the rear of the car.”
The court then heard at 8am, Hunjan’s ex-wife checked her car and noticed “extensive scratches” and three names written on the car – all of which where friends of the accused.
Mr Gallagher added: “Police were contacted who traced the accused in the afternoon of April 5, where he was cautioned and charged for vandalism where he made no reply.
“The total loss of damage was £200 and Ms Hunjan is supportive of a non-harassment order.”
Hunjan’s defence agent explained this was a “moment of madness”.
He told the court: “The marriage broke down in December and, since then, he hasn’t been allowed to see his children. He bumped into his ex-wife in a nightclub and learned his two children were at home being looked after by his ex-wife’s sister.
“He had been drinking and a friend drove him to her address in Paisley and in a moment of madness, he vandalises her car. He is quite ashamed of what he has done.”
Sentencing, Sheriff Suhkwinder Gill said: “You’re a young man of 27 with no previous convictions. I was told this was a moment of madness. I hear that phrase all the time in this court.
“I note the domestic aggravation here but I am going to deal with this today with a fine. You saw your ex-partner on a night out and I suspect anger and emotion set in and that’s why you acted in this way.”
Sheriff Gill ordered Hunjan, of North Woodside Road, Glasgow, to pay a total fine of £280. The unemployed customer service advisor was ordered to pay the fine at the rate of £50 per month.
