DRS may be introduced in Tamil Nadu Premier League

CHENNAI: The sixth edition of the Tamil Nadu Premier League (TNPL) is likely to see the debut of Decision Review System (DRS). As the franchises met with members of the TNPL governing council here on Thursday, the talk was on exploring the DRS option.

“Most of the franchises were in favour of employing the DRS. If we get sufficient sponsorships to make use of the technology, then DRS definitely will be made use of in the upcoming TNPL season,” a source close to the development told TOI.

“With matches being telecast live, having DRS will only give more credibility to the tournament,” the source added.

The Tamil Nadu Cricket Association (TNCA) is keen on hosting the tournament from June end.

“The five-match T20I series featuring India and South Africa will conclude on June 19. Since we could have a few of our players being part of it, the tentative plan is to have the TNPL season from June end to July end,” said the source.

The schedule of the season will be released in the coming weeks.

Depending on the Covid-19 situation, a call will be made on the number of venues where the tournament will be held.

“Last year, we held the tournament only at Chepauk. But if the situation this year improves, we may think of conducting the tournament in venues outside Chennai as well. The tournament will be broadcast on Star Sports and we hope to find a taker for the digital rights soon,” said the source.
