Drogheda United have condemned the alleged racist abuse of Finn Harp's Ethan Boyle in Friday night's SSE Airtricity League Premier Division fixture.
The defender was said to have been targeted by one individual, who was removed from the ground at half time, with Drogheda United confirming that the person will be banned from attending future matches.
A statement from the Louth club on Saturday read: “Drogheda United condemn the racist abuse suffered by Ethan Boyle last night. The individual in question was identified and removed from the ground at half time, and will be banned from attending future Drogheda United matches.
“Racism has no place in society or football.”
Drogheda United's statement came after Boyle's club Finn Harps condemned the incident which happened during a 3-1 defeat at Head in the Game Park.
The Donegal club had said: “Finn Harps condemn the racist abuse that Ethan Boyle was subjected to at the game last night”.
“We would like to thank Drogheda United and their supporters for reacting quickly and dealing with the person involved,” the Donegal outfit’s statement added.
“Racism has no place in our game.”
Following the incident, Boyle has received a lot of support on social media, with his fellow players dismayed that he was allegedly subject to such abuse.
Republic of Ireland international Rianna Jarrett said: “Crazy to think that our country has come so far in recent years but this is still happening in this day and age! Nobody should have to experience this.”
