Drivers warned over vital Highway Code rule after motorist spotted making crucial mistake

The RAC has issued a warning to all drivers planning to hit the road as Scotland faces heavy snowfall.

With yellow weather alerts in place, motorists across the country have been urged to take caution in extreme road conditions as they risk becoming stranded or skidding on icy surfaces. Forecasters at the Met Office are urging Scots to reconsider journey plans over the next few days.

Drivers are also required to make sure their vehicle is safe to use in adverse weather and RAC were forced to issue a fresh reminder after one driver was spotted breaking a crucial safety guidelines. Posting a photo of the error on Twitter, the motor authority said: "Can you spot what is wrong with this picture?"

While it may be easy to miss, the driver has failed to clear the car's windows of gathered snow. Failing to sweep snow off your car, especially from important points of vision, is a breach of rule 229 of the Highway code and can result in a £1,000 fine and three licence points.

The RAC added: "Late for work? Or just popping out on a short journey but your car is covered in snow and ice? Rule 229 of The Highway Code states you MUST be able to see, so clear all snow and ice from your windows before setting off."

The rule covers guidelines for driving in adverse weather conditions and driving in snow, even with cleared windows can reduce road visibility. According to the Highway Code, all drivers must have daytime running lights that switch on when the engine starts to improve road safety.

Drivers risk also being slapped with penalties for breaking other Highway Code rules in snowy weather. All car lights and number plates must be clearly visible and legible, while windows and mirrors must be thoroughly demisted.

Also, clearing cars of snow doesn't stop at the windows. Rule 229 also states that drivers must remove all snow that could fall onto other road users, so make sure the roof is snow free before setting off.
