Drivers face up to £1K fine for getting worked up on the road

Shouting and swearing at other road users could land drivers with a £1,000 fine. Motorists are being warned to think twice about giving into road rage because erratic hand gestures could leave drivers facing the hefty penalty for losing control of their vehicle.

There are many driving laws that need to be adhered to by motorists - and they’re consistently being updated. But it's a driver's responsibility to be aware of the laws to avoid any repercussions or danger to other road users.

With this in mind, price comparison website Confused.com has highlighted the potentially unknown offence that could cost drivers a lot of money. It's not only the initial fine that's expensive, but car insurance premiums are also likely to increase for motorists with points on their licence.

Drivers should also refrain from using their horns out of anger or risk an instant £30 fine. The Highway Code states that car horns should only be used to warn other road users of imminent danger as an alert system. Using it for anything else is against the law.

There are also time constraints for using your horn. According to the Highway Code, it is illegal to use your horn on a restricted road between the times of 11.30pm and 07am.

Louise Thomas, car insurance expert at Confused.com said: “It is the driver's responsibility to ensure they are up to date with all driving laws. It is imperative they remain calm and collected at the wheel, not only for their own safety but also for the safety of other road users.

“Drivers should know that depending on the offence, points on your licence could last up to 11 years. This can make insurance more expensive, or more difficult to get if your offence was more serious.”
