Drivers could face more traffic chaos as lane to remain closed for several days

Drivers could face more traffic chaos as roadworks are set to remain in a part of Manchester city centre for several days.

Corporation Street was closed to northbound traffic from Victoria station to the Inner Ring Road yesterday – seeing the area gridlocked through the evening on Saturday (October 15).

The delays came as a giant crane was horizontal on the road near to where building work has been taking place for the New Victoria development. The first phase of the project sees 520 new apartments being built in new skyscrapers, before offices will follow in the second phase.

The lane has been closed in recent days, with traffic only able to drive southbound towards Victoria from the Inner Ring Road, at NOMA.

And delays could remain for several more days as two-way signals are set to remain in the area until October 20, according to the TFGM website.

The closure caused so much disruption in the city centre last night that the Exchange Square Metrolink stop had to close. A spokesperson for Metrolink wrote on Twitter at the time: "Due to heavy road traffic in the city, no services are operating from Exchange Square.

"Passengers wishing to travel to Rochdale and East Didsbury should make their way to Market Street, Shudehill, or Victoria. Thank you."
