Drivers aged 70 and over have been warned that they must renew their licence every three years.
The reminder from the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA) comes as recent figures show there are now about 10million drivers aged 70 and above in the UK.
Motorists who do not renew their licence once they have passed their 70th birthday will no longer be able to legally operate a vehicle, and will be committing a serious offence if they carry on driving.
Penalties for such offences can involve a maximum fine of £1,000.
This can be avoided by filling out a D46P application form, which the DVLA should send to your registered address 90 days before you turn 70.
Paper copies of the form can also be obtained from the Post Office if you do not receive one through the post, while those who wish to fill out the form online can do so from the beginning of the 90-day period.
You must renew every three years once you pass the age of 70.
Reminding drivers about the rule on Twitter, the DVLA wrote: "After you turn 70, you need to renew your licence every three years. It’s easy, quick and secure to do it online."
A replacement should arrive in one week when the forms are submitted online via the DVLA website, the Daily Record reports.
Those using the website for the first time will need to register and will need to provide an email address, addresses of where you’ve lived for the last three years, your National Insurance number (if you know it) and a valid UK passport number (if you want to change the licence photo).
You can still drive while your licence is being renewed as long as: you have the support of your doctor to continue driving, you had a valid licence, you only drive under the conditions of the previous licence, your application is less than a year old, your last licence wasn’t revoked or refused for medical reasons, and you’re not currently disqualified.
Drivers who were disqualified as a high-risk offender on or after June 1, 2013 cannot drive while their licence is being renewed.
