Motorists are being advised of when they are entitled to a free NCT as many report extremely long wait times for an appointment.
The backlog has been something drivers have been complaining about for months, with some even reporting that they could not find an available date for six to nine months.
Due to these hefty wait times, it has been reported that around 2,000 motorists have been offered NCT free of charge since the start of the year.

It is understood that drivers can qualify for a free test if they are not offered an appointment within 28 days of applying for one.
If this is the case, then the driver avoids the regular €55 cost, according to the Independent.
A spokesperson for NCT operator Applus confirmed that a total of 2,100 customers have qualified for a test at no charge in 2023 so far.
“The NCT service recognises there are significant waiting lists for NCT appointments – we have increased capacity, and will continue to do so until the issue is resolved,” she said.
“Recruitment is still ongoing, and so far in 2023, we have recruited 24 vehicle inspectors who are now in the NCT test centres testing.”
There are terms and conditions associated with these free tests, such as that a free test will not be offered if the vehicle owner has made specific requests for suitable days, times or dates.
They will also not be offered the service free-of-charge if they have failed to attend an appointment, declined or rearranged two or more appointments, or previously accepted or requested an appointment outside the 28-day period.
“The vast majority of customers receive an appointment within four weeks of application,” said the spokesperson.
“Each booking request is evaluated, and if they qualify for a free test, it is allocated.”
