Driver cleared of hitting Emmerdale actress Chelsea Halfpenny's grandad in 'hit and run'

A driver arrested after the grandad of an Emmerdale actress was hurt in a hit and run has been cleared of the charges.

Kane Oman, 26, had been accused of being the driver of a Mercedes that didn't stop after injuring Derek Halfpenny, 85. Derek is the grandfather of Chelsea Halfpenny, who plays Amy Wyatt in the ITV soap.

He was injured in Gateshead, on Woodburn on the Leam Lane estate. Oman was also facing charges of failing to report an accident, driving without due care and attention, driving otherwise than in accordance with a licence, and driving without in insurance, on the same street.

He pleaded not guilty to all of these charges at South Tyneside Magistrates Court last week. They were all discontinued, ChronicleLive reports.

Oman, of Glenridding Close in Low Fell, Gateshead, was also charged with driving without insurance otherwise than in accordance with a licence on a different Leam Lane Road on the same date. He pleaded guilty to these offences.

Oman was fined £135 and given eight points on his licence. He will also pay £34 victim surcharge and £85 court costs.

Last month another man was fined after being charged in connection with the incident. 31-year-old Liam Johnson of Gartland Road in Pennywell, Sunderland, pleaded guilty to permitting Oman to drive the Mercedes otherwise than in accordance with a licence, on Woodburn on the same date.

Johnson was ordered to pay a victim surcharge of £34, costs of £110 and a fine of £143 at Gateshead Magistrates Court.

After the collision, Chelsea asked people for information, saying "Do the right thing. You have left somebody in a critical condition. You will be found."

There have been three other people arrested in connection with the incident who remain under investigation.
