Driver 'destroys' historic 126-year-old clock tower in crash

AN ELDERLY driver has allegedly crashed into a memorial clock tower in Stirlingshire causing significant damage as police appeal for witnesses.

The 78-year-old woman, driving an orange Mini Cooper, crashed three times before finally striking the 126-year-old Paterson Memorial Clock in Bridge of Allan at around 4.20pm on Friday.

The driver, who was the only occupant of the car, is believed to have first struck a barrier as she exited a car park on Henderson Street before driving onto Union Street, where she then proceeded to hit two parked cars.

She was then taken to Forth Valley Royal Hospital for treatment and was later discharged.

Police have said that she will be the subject of a report to the procurator fiscal for alleged road traffic offences.

In a post shared to social media the Bridge of Allan Community Council said it was saddened by the news of the clock face being “destroyed”.

The post read: “The Paterson Clock has long been a cherished landmark in our village, and we know how much it means to the community.

“We will work with Stirling Council to understand the possibility of repair of such an important landmark.”

Constable Maxwell Polley is appealing for witnesses and for anyone with dashcam footage of the incident.

She said: “I am keen to hear from anyone who was in the area at the time and who has not yet spoken to police to come forward. I’d also like to view any dashcam footage from Union Street and Henderson Street captured between 4.20pm and 4.30pm.

“If you have any information that you believe may assist officers with their enquiries, please call 101 and quote incident number 2385 of Friday, December 6, 2024.”
