Driver arrested after U-turning into oncoming traffic on busy road during police chase

A Bolton driver has been arrested after they were caught doing a U-turn and driving towards oncoming traffic in a cloned car.

Police engaged in a pursuit with a driver of a cloned vehicle on the A666 in Bolton on Friday (April 22). During the pursuit, the driver attempted to make a U-turn in the carriageway before driving towards oncoming cars.

The chase was brought to a 'safe conclusion', GMP say, and the driver was arrested after trying to flee from officers on foot.

Posting on the GMP Traffic Twitter page, a spokesperson said: “Friday 22/04 #SRTTaskingTeam pursued this cloned Vauxhall Astra on the A666 in Bolton. The driver attempted to do a U-Turn in the carriageway and drive towards oncoming cars.

“#TacticalContact brought the pursuit to a safe conclusion + the driver was detained following a foot chase.”

Cloned vehicles involve the copying of the identity of an existing vehicle by stealing or duplicating registration plates. It is often used to carry out crime or to avoid speeding or parking fines.

The incident happened just hours before police engaged in another pursuit in Bolton on Friday evening where a man was arrested on suspicion of drink driving and 'drug offences' after a Mercedes smashed into an Audi on Chorley New Road.
