A POLICE chase spanning from King Steet to Denman overnight was allegedly sparked after a man with cannabis in his car ran a red light.

Newcastle police were patrolling in the CBD area just before 8.30pm on Sunday, November 3, when they saw a driver allegedly fail to stop at a red traffic light.

Police said the man behind the wheel, who was allegedly suspended from driving, failed to pull over and a pursuit was launched.

The alleged chase continued to the intersection of Bureen Road and Martindale Road, at Bureen, about 125 kilometres away from Newcastle, where police successfully deployed road spikes.

Police called off the alleged chase when the vehicle stopped on Yarrawa Road at Denman and police arrested a 27-year-old man at the scene.

Police allegedly seized "material alleged to be cannabis"after a search of the vehicle.

The man was taken to Muswellbrook Police Station where he was charged with two counts of not stopping at a red light, police pursuit, possessing a prohibited drug, a fraud allegation and driving while licence suspended.

He spent the night in custody after he was refused bail by police and ordered to front Muswellbrook Local Court on the charges today.
