A driver has admitted causing the death of Callum Geary in a horror crash on the A68 in County Durham.
Mr Geary from Bishop Auckland, was a passenger in a car that was involved in a head-on collision with a lorry on the A68 at Hummerbeck, on August 14, 2020. He sadly died days later on August 23.
Cameron Kitch, who was driving a Vauxhall Astra at the time, was subsequently arrested and charged with causing death by dangerous driving in connection with the West Auckland smash. The 21-year-old appeared at Durham Crown Court in February and pleaded not guilty to the single charge.
A trial estimated to last around three days was then set to begin in August. However, Kitch, of East Green, West Auckland, returned to the court last week for a case management hearing, and the charge was put to him once more.
This time, he pleaded guilty to the charge on a basis. Discussions over the factual basis over the plea are required to take place, but Kitch will still be sentenced next month.
Judge James Adkin, the Recorder of Durham, said it was a "terrible incident" when the case was heard in February, and told the court on Thursday that the factual basis will have to be given in writing to the court.
Kitch will appear back at the court for sentence on Friday, July 29. He was granted bail until his next appearance.
