A driver has had what police described as a "lucky escape" after becoming stuck at a railway crossing while doing a U-turn in the Adelaide Hills.
The man was forced to abandon the vehicle at the crossing on Jeffrey Street at Nairne, before it was hit by a freight train a short time later.
The car was dragged about 100 metres along the track about 7:45pm.
Police said the man was the only person in the car and that "luckily no-one was injured".
The back of the car sustained the brunt of the damage, and the rail line was closed for several hours.
Emergency services including police, paramedics and two Country Fire Service trucks attended the scene.
Nairne is on the Adelaide to Melbourne rail line chiefly used by freight trains as well as the Overland passenger service.
Police said investigations into the incident were continuing.
