Driver, 68, is arrested after cyclist killed in ‘hit-and-run’ crash near Old Kent Road

An elderly motorist has been arrested after a cyclist died in a suspected hit-and-run smash in south east London.

A car driven by a 68-year-old man collided with a 34-year-old who was riding his bike on Old Kent Road near the junction with Dunton Road.

London Ambulance Service treated him at the scene in Bermondsey.

Despite the best efforts of paramedics, he sadly died at around 7am on Friday.

The Metropolitan Police said his next of kin have been informed and are being supported by specially-trained officers.

The driver failed to stop at the scene, according to a force spokesman.

He was traced by police a short while later and detained on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving.

He has been released on bail, pending further enquiries.

Detective Sergeant Rob Groombridge, from the Met’s Serious Collision Investigation Unit, said: “An investigation is underway, and officers are working to establish what happened.

“I’m appealing for anyone who saw the collision, or who may have captured footage of it on their dashcam, to please contact us as soon as possible.”

LAS added: “We were called at 6.57am on November 21 to reports of a road traffic collision in Old Kent Road, Bermondsey.

“We sent an ambulance crew, paramedics in fast response cars and an incident response officer to the scene. We also dispatched a trauma team in a car from London’s Air Ambulance.

“The first paramedic arrived in less than five minutes.

“Sadly despite attempts to save his life, a man died at the scene.”

Anyone with information is asked to call the Serious Collision Unit on 0207 1750754 or via 101, quoting CAD 1109/21NOV.
