Drew Barrymore reunites with E.T. co-stars to celebrate 40th anniversary of beloved film

Drew Barrymore reunited with her E.T. co-stars in an emotional get-together to mark the 40th anniversary of the classic 80s movie.

The actress, 47, skyrocketed to fame when she starred alongside Henry Thomas, 51, Robert McNaughton, 55, and Dee Wallace, 73, in the iconic flick.

She was just six-years-old when she joined the cast as Gertie in the Steven Spielberg film, with Henry playing her on-screen brother Elliott.

Drew fondly recalled thinking the Extra-Terrestrial 'was real' as a child in the latest episode of her talk programme The Drew Barrymore Show.

"I really loved him in such a profound way. Is it like true that, what would happen, because I would go and take lunch to him," she told Robert, who player her older brother, and Dee, who played the on-screen siblings' mother.

Henry recalled: "The first thing I remember is that we were on stage and it was quite cold on the stage and you asked the wardrobe lady if you could have a scarf for E.T.’s neck because he was gonna get cold."

Dee then explained that highly acclaimed director Stephen noticed Drew's love for his alien character, and ensured she was able to communicate with it.

"We found you over there just talking away to E.T. and so we let Steven know and so Steven from that time on appointed two guys to keep E.T. alive so whenever you came over to talk to him he could react to you," Dee revealed.

Noticeably emotional by the reunion, the group then discussed if there would ever be a sequel to the Sci-Fi film-buff favourite.

Henry said: "I mean they talked about it in the early eighties because it was such a success and I think Universal wanted the sequel.

"It’s hard to think about a sequel with Melissa Mathison who passed away recently, it’s hard to think about a sequel without a script from her because she was really the heart and soul of it.

Dee quipped: "It’s a classic, leave it a classic."

Drew says she thought E.T 'was real' when she was six (CBS)

Drew then explained: "I feel like I remember, and Steven will correct me if I’m wrong…I remember him saying, and I remember the word, he said, 'I’ll never make a sequel to E.T'.

"In that moment I thought, 'Oh that’s a bummer because that doesn’t bring us all back together again for another round'.

"But I also understood and respected and completely knew that it was all about preservation of integrity for him."
