‘Dreams do come true!’ McFly superfan from Manchester invited on stage to play at gig

A McFly superfan from Manchester's dreams came true over the weekend, when he was invited on stage to play with the band at a show in Staffordshire. The band were part of the Trentham Live series of gigs and played their set on Sunday night.

25-year-old guitarist Tom Knight, originally from Cardiff but living in Manchester, tagged the band into a video of him playing along to the solo in McFly song That Girl last month, asking the the band to ‘tap him in’.

Clearly impressed with his skills, the band’s Harry Judd replied to the video and asked him if he’d be going along to their gig at Trentham Gardens. Tom told Harry that, sadly, he couldn’t afford the ticket.

But coming to the rescue, Harry then messaged Tom directly on Twitter offering him and his girlfriend Jodie guestlists tickets, and off they went to the show.

“For me, that was already enough!” Tom told the Manchester Evening News. “We were running really late because of traffic and only made it in by the skin of our teeth! As we arrived, Harry messaged me and asked if I knew how to play Everybody Knows, and that’s when it hit me.

“Then he asked me if I could play the solo and I said I could get through it but it was their call. He said he thought I’d be fine and to meet their tour manager at the side of the stage halfway through the show.

“The tour manager, James, told me to stand in the golden circle and wait to be called on. Which I did. And then, it happened. They called me up, gave me a guitar and told me to kick off the song.”

Harry introduced Tom, and told the crowd how he'd seen his videos on Twitter, and then joined the band on stage and played the whole of the track with them.

“They were all so lovely and welcoming and just so much fun to play with. An absolute lifelong dream come true,” Tom went on. “If I close my eyes today, I’m straight back on stage with them. I even got to do the McFly jump!! Absolute madness.”

He went on to say that he ‘couldn’t get to sleep’ after the show because he was still so excited, and ‘can’t thank the guys enough’ for the opportunity.

“I’ve loved them for 19 years and they have been such inspirations for me,” he added. It's not the first time Tom has asked the band if they needed some extra guitar support, with another 'audition' video pinned to his Twitter page from back in 2019.
