DreamCloud Premier vs Puffy Royal Mattress: Materials and Design

  • Both are a hybrid design
  • The DreamCloud Premier has a 13” profile
  • The Puffy Royal has a 14” profile

The DreamCloud Premier and Puffy Royal are both hybrid mattresses, which means they are crafted from a combination of foams and coils. Like the best hybrid mattresses, these beds balance cushioning comfort and support. But whilst they may both be hybrids there are some differences in the build.

The DreamCloud Premier is 13” in height and comes in a medium-firm tension. It starts with a breathable cashmere blend cover that is plush and soft to the touch whilst still delivering some cooling properties. Next is a layer of quilted gel memory foam and a layer of quilted supportive foam which offers more cushioning and a responsive feel, making it perfect for side, back and combination sleepers.

The next layers are where the support begins. There’s a dynamic transition layer that helps to promote proper spinal alignment before a layer of individually wrapped coils that offer responsive support and promote additional airflow. The final layer is a stability base layer which is all encased in a shift-resistant lower comfort cover that has tufted borders and handles for a luxe look.

The Puffy Royal is an inch thicker with a 14” profile and has an extra internal layer.  The quilted top layer is made using cooling yarn which will help with the temperature regulation of the mattress. It's then followed by two thin layers, a blended wool filling and climate fiber layers. These also work to help promote a cooler sleep with the wool wicking away moisture whilst the climate fiber layer helps with air circulation.

There are then four foam layers. The first layer is an infused cooling foam and plush contouring layer which stops heat being trapped within the foam but also contours to the body. Next is a reflexive memory foam layer which is 2” of premium contouring foam making it easy to change positions during the night and provide pressure relief. This is followed by a layer of cloud comfort pressure relief foam for good spinal alignment and then a layer of cloud sculpting technology foam that will cushion your pressure points, especially the head, neck, shoulders, hips and legs.

Finally, there’s a 6” layer of foam encased pocketed coils that aids with the stability of the mattress as well as helping with motion isolation and a 1” high-density full body support foam that goes around the entire perimeter of the mattress. This is all encased in a grip base cover to keep the mattress from slipping around the surface.

DreamCloud Premier vs Puffy Royal Mattress: Comfort and support

  • The DreamCloud Premier is a medium-firm
  • The Puffy Royal is a soft-medium
  • Both mattresses excel with motion transfer

The DreamCloud Premier is a medium-firm mattress and during our DreamCloud Premier mattress review, our tester placed it more on the firmer end of the scale. However, the soft, pillow top provides plenty of cushioning comfort and pressure relief across the shoulder, hips and knees.

The DreamCloud Premier is a really good choice for side, back and combination sleepers as the layers of foam offer full body contouring and the coils offer responsive support for perfect spinal alignment.

The Puffy Royal is an ultra-plush, soft-medium mattress. In our Puffy Royal mattress review our tester described it as like sinking into a cloud. The pressure relief on this mattress is outstanding. The combination of contouring, reflexive and sculpting foam provides the right amount of support to keep the back and spine perfectly aligned whilst still cushioning and providing pressure relief to the head, neck, shoulders, hips and knees.

Because of its softness, the Puffy Royal is perfect for side sleepers, but whilst it does still offer a good level of support, back and stomach sleepers will find this too soft and the sink-in will mean risking joint and muscle pain.

Neither mattress has what we’d class as a traditional memory foam feel, even with the Puffy Royal you won’t sink so far into the surface that you’ll feel stuck. Both of these mattresses are also really responsive so you’ll be able to move around freely, which is especially useful if you’re a combination sleeper that changes positions during the night.

Both of these mattresses do an excellent job of motion isolation, despite them being hybrids. They both have plenty of layers of foam that absorb a lot of the movement as well as individually pocketed coils. This means they move independently, reducing motion transfer across the whole bed, particularly useful if you’re sharing with a restless partner or pet.

Edge support on the DreamCloud Premier is outstanding, this mattress has two rows of thicker coils around the perimeter of the bed so if you like to sit or sleep close to the edge, you won’t feel any dipping or sagging. The Puffy Cloud doesn’t fare so well when it comes to edge support, whilst it didn’t dip as much as we’d expect with an all foam mattress, it doesn’t quite have the same level of firmness as the DreamCloud Premier.

DreamCloud Premier vs Puffy Royal Mattress: Temperature Regulation

  • DreamCloud Premier has a moisture-wicking cover
  • Both beds are hybrid so springs promote additional airflow
  • Puffy Royal has layers of cooling foam and a climate fiber

Although neither of these mattresses are dedicated cooling mattresses, the DreamCloud Premier and Puffy Royal do have materials that help to promote a cooler sleep.

The DreamCloud Premier has a breathable cashmere blend cover which helps to wick away moisture and allows for greater airflow. It also has a layer of gel-memory foam and individually encases coils which will encourage more airflow and ensure that heat doesn’t get trapped within the layers.

The Puffy Royal also performs well when it comes to temperature regulation. This mattress enjoys a cool-to-the-touch quilted cloud cover followed by a thin layer of blended wool filling which wicks away moisture and another thin layer of climate fiber which allows for additional airflow. It then includes a layer of foam infused with cooling gel and a 6” layer of foam-encased foils so air can flow freely around the mattress.

Both of these mattresses will be suitable for those who get a little warm overnight. However, if you sleep very hot, suffer hot flashes or experience regular night sweats you may want to check out our guide to this year's best cooling mattresses instead.
