This was the dramatic moment a car became engulfed in flames by the side of a motorway. Firefighters were called out to the M61 near Bolton after a black Vauxhall Corsa burst into flames.
The car had to stop on the hard shoulder between junctions eight at Chorley and six at Horwich on the southbound carriageway. Fire crews were called out to deal with the blaze, which took place on Monday (April 10).
Two fire engines were sent out to the incident, with crews remaining at the scene for 45 minutes. Video footage shows the Corsa at a standstill by the side of the carriageway while flames erupt from the front of the car.
Other vehicles were able to pass by along the motorway while the incident unfolded. A spokesperson for Lancashire Fire and Rescue Service said: "Two fire engines from Chorley and Horwich attended a vehicle fire on the M61 southbound between junction eight and junction six.
"Fire crews used one hose reel and one breathing apparatus to extinguish the fire. Crews were in attendance for 45 minutes."
