Dramatic moment car drove on to tracks at south London train station sparking travel chaos

Firefighters check vehicle in south east London - (Network Rail)

This is the dramatic moment a car drove on to train tracks causing rail chaos across huge swathes of south east London.

Emergency services were called to New Beckenham station at around 4.30am on Saturday.

Photos show fire crews working at the scene and checking if anyone was trapped inside the silver Ford vehicle.

London Ambulance Service said paramedics and an incident response officer arrived but there were no patients to treat, so they were stood down.

Steve White, managing director of Southeastern Railway, posted on X, formerly Twitter: “In the last 48 hours our railway has been affected by three bridge strikes and this road traffic accident.”

On social media, one person asked: “How on earth did he/she manage to do that?”

Another said: “Exact same place as a couple of years ago”, while a third added: “Not again!”

Network Rail said: “We are working as quickly as we can to open the railway after a car got on to the line overnight.

“We thank all passengers for their patience during this time and we are sorry for the impact this has had on their journeys.”

It later said lines had reopened following a safety inspection of the track.

But warned trains running through this station may still be delayed by up to 25 minutes or cancelled.

The Metropolitan Police and British Transport Police were approached for further comment.
