Dramatic images show firefighters tackling fireball flat blaze in Scots town

Dramatic images have emerged of firefighters responding to a flat blaze from which two people were rescued in the early hours of Sunday.

As reported by the Record earlier today a man and a woman have been rescued from an upstairs apartment on Dalrymple Street in Girvan after a fire broke out shortly before 1am. Four fire appliances remained on the scene in the Ayrshire town overnight as fire officers continued to dampen down the blaze.

No-one was injured in the fire, and police are not treating the incident as suspicious. However, the images shared by a local paint a dramatic picture of the efforts fire officers went to in responding to the fireball as it threatened to consume the building.

Fire officers received a 999 call at around 12.40am reporting the fire, which is believed to have started in the flat above a bookmakers' on Girvan's high street.

Upon arrival, a height appliance was seen extending its ladder to tackle the flames from on high.

Other images taken from the rear of the building show firefighters using a hose reel jet to dampen the inferno from another angle.

However, while the fire has been extinguished the building has been extensively damaged. Photos in the daylight show that the roof of the building has collapsed altogether.

Access to Dalrymple Street was closed while emergency services contained the incident, with cordons in place until at least 10.30am according to trunk road monitors Amey.

Fire crews left the scene shortly after 11am after making the building safe.

A Scottish Fire and Rescue Service spokesperson said: "We received a call to attend a building fire at a residential premises on Dalrymple Street, Girvan at around 12.40am on Sunday September 18 2022.

"Four appliances were in attendance. The stop order came in at 11.09am."

A Police Scotland spokesperson said: "Around 12.50 am on Sunday 18 September 2022, police were alerted to a fire at a flat on Dalrymple Street, Girvan. The two occupants of the flat, a man and woman, were evacuated and no one is reported as being injured.

"The fire is not being treated as suspicious. Police and Scottish Fire and Rescue Service remain at the scene.

"Dalrymple Street remains closed. Local diversions are in place and motorists are advised to avoid the area until further notice."
