Drama group returns to Hamilton with their Easter story this Good Friday

Drama Kirk are delighted to be back in the heart of Hamilton, performing the Easter story this Good Friday, April 15.

'I Am With You Always' is a new play, which journeys through Holy Week with Jesus and the disciples. It will be performed on the streets of Hamilton by the group, bringing together members of local churches and professional actors in a community celebration.

This year's play was specially created for Drama Kirk by Simon McCallum, a Scottish Playwright whose previous work includes BBC Scotland’s River City.

The play features the traditional scenes associated with Easter, including the last supper and Jesus’ death and resurrection.

The opportunity to see the events of the final week of Jesus’ life portrayed through drama is an experience not to be missed – one which can shed new light on familiar stories, deepening understanding and emotional engagement.

The play opens with the celebration of Jesus’ triumphal entry into Jerusalem, but the audience will quickly see the danger he is in as the local priests plot against him, bribing one of his followers to betray him and he is handed over to the Romans to be put to death.

“The Easter story is a perpetual message of hope” director Liz Blackman told Lanarkshire Live.

“Despite the despair we see in Jesus’ followers, he beats death and returns. However, I think this message of hope is especially true this Easter.

"As a community, we too are emerging from darkness. We need the Easter message of hope and re-birth more than ever."

This will be the first time the group have performed their Easter play since 2019, since lockdown measures in 2020 and 2021 made it impossible.

"They are delighted to return to performing in person and can’t wait to share the new play.

The play will take place on Friday, April 15 at 2pm in Castle Street, Hamilton, lasting one hour.
