Drains cleaned, but dirt flows back due to heavy rain in Jaipur

JAIPUR: Despite cleaning of storm water drains in the city to prevent waterlogging, the drains have again choked as dirt and muck left outside has flown back into it due to the recent rainfall. This is a common sight in the city currently as drain cleaning is still underway in some areas, but officials said that most of the work has been done.

Officials said that the dirt cannot be cleared immediately as it is wet and needs to dry out. But with monsoon setting in and frequent rain, the dirt again gets wet and is left lying on the roads.

Mahendra Soni, commissioner for JMC-Greater said that the work for cleaning the storm water drains has mostly been completed across the city and only a few areas are left. “When a storm water drain is cleared, the dirt is first left to dry out before it is taken to the dumping yard in Sewapura. Hence, sometimes the dirt and muck are kept beside the road, but mostly it is picked up. We faced some hiccups in the first rain this season, but after that all the work is being done smoothly and complaints to the flood control room has -also reduced,”said Soni.

In the JMC-G area, there are a total of 748 drains of which over 720 have already been cleaned, said officials.

Officials said that the work has been delayed this year as zone-wise tenders for cleaning the drains were floated in May end, but work started in June.
