DR Congo and M23 rebels say they will sign peace deal mid-August

Peace mediator Sumbu Sita Mambu, a high representative of the head of state in the Democratic Republic of Congo, and Rwanda-backed armed group M23 executive secretary Benjamin Mbonimpa shake hands after signing a ceasefire deal in the Qatari capital Doha, on 19 July 2025, to end fighting that has devastated the country's mineral-rich but conflict-torn east. The Democratic Republic of the Congo and the M23 rebel group have committed to signing a peace agreement by 18 August, as announced during a ceremony held in Doha on Saturday. While this development indicates progress, several key issues remain unresolved and subject to further negotiation. Analysts are now assessing the likelihood of the agreement achieving a durable resolution to the conflict.

Since February, the front in eastern DRC has stabilised, but violence has intensified between the M23 and a myriad of pro-Kinshasa militias waging guerrilla warfare in eastern Congo, a region bordering Rwanda that is rich in minerals and has been plagued by conflict for more than 30 years.
