The DSPCA are holding a two day event to encourage people to adopt lurchers as part of International Dog day.
The animal welfare charity has set up a ‘Lurcher Lounge’ where people interested in adding a lurcher to their family can spend time with the animals currently residing in the Rathfarnham shelter.
Lurchers are typically a very active breed but often recline on sofas at the end of an action packed day. The lounge launched today and will also be open on Saturday for anyone interested in learning more about lurchers, who are also referred to as sighthounds.

“If you’re looking to lounge with a lurcher and hopefully find the couch potato of your dreams then come along and join us Friday and Saturday to meet all our gorgeous sighthounds looking for loving homes,” the charity wrote on a post to Instagram.
People can also grab a coffee and quick bite in the dog friendly café Ruff. The café is located in the DSPCA grounds and has outdoor seating. The event will last from 12-4pm.
Lurchers are amongst one of the most abandoned dog breeds in Ireland. Lurchers were not seen as typical pets until recent years, as they were commonly bred for hunting and poaching purposes. The dogs often display a gentle, nervous nature and the DSPCA claims they make fantastic additions to the family.
