Parcel delivery giant DPD has confirmed delays to some Nottingham and Nottinghamshire postcodes. Thousands of homes across the county from Nottingham city centre to Newark will be impacted by the move, which is a temporary measure to its next-day delivery service.
As Christmas nears and online shopping and therefore parcel delivery increases, pressure is piled on delivery firms. That pressure, according to DPD, has further increased "as a result of the industrial action at the Royal Mail".
Royal Mail workers staged a strike on Sunday, December 11, and Monday, December 12. The industrial action being taken over pay, jobs and conditions, will continue tomorrow, Wednesday, December 14, and on Thursday, December 15. Further strike action is planned for Friday, December 23, and Saturday, December 24, according to The Communication Workers Union (CWU).
The delays to DPD customers have been caused by an increased in demand for the firm's services. A spokesperson for the delivery firm has said customers in some areas should expect delays of 24 to 48 hours to its next-day service. Adding that customers will be updated if they have provided contact details. This is a temporary measure.

A DPD statement provided to Liverpool Echo said: "We are experiencing short delays to our next-day delivery service in a small number of locations, as a result of the industrial action at the Royal Mail, which has had a huge knock-on effect across the entire industry. As a result of the industrial action, we have seen an increase in demand for our services, as shippers seek alternatives to the Royal Mail in the UK.
"While the service is unaffected in most areas, we have today temporarily suspended next-day deliveries to around 5% of postcodes in the UK. The expected delays of 24 to 48 hours and the postcodes impacted are shown on our website.
"Where delays do occur, we update the parcel recipient directly where our customers have provided us with their contact details. Any delays at this time of year are hugely regrettable and while the underlying issues here are outside of our control, we would wish to reassure retailers and parcel recipients that our team is doing everything possible to minimise the impact on next-day deliveries."
