Downpatrick carpark bonfire concerns as site becomes dumping ground

Concerns have been raised about bonfire material being dumped in a council run carpark.

The build up of waste materials for the Eleventh Night celebration in Downpatrick has seen large amounts of cardboard and garden waste piled up in the facility at the town's Mount Crescent.

The Mount Crescent 25 space non-charging zone is managed by Newry, Mourne and Down District Council (NMDDC). The Council carpark contains a number of disabled driver spaces.

SDLP councillor, Gareth Sharvin said: "There is a carpark being used as a dumping ground for bonfire collection in Downpatrick in Mount Crescent, Bridge Street.
"On the lead up before the summer break, this was an area that was used as a drop off point by parents for their children going to Down High School.
"There are local concerns in the community about this level of waste being allowed to build up in the area.
"Other DEAs (district electoral areas) have taken action. Will steps now be taken by the council to address these concerns?"

A council officer responded: "We will be engaging with the PCSP (Policing Community Safety Partnership) on this matter."
