Downing Street security alert as protesters try to climb over metal gate

Eco-activists have tried to storm Downing Street by climbing over the metal gate.

The Just Stop Oil protestors were dragged down as they attempted to scale the fence this morning.

Some of the demonstrators glued themselves to the ground in front of Downing Street, blocking the entrance.

Police were filmed dragging some of the protestors away from the Downing Street gate.

Just Stop Oil has staged a series of protests over the past month and is calling for the Government to halt all new gas and oil projects.

A spokesperson for the campaign group said: “Rishi Sunak is about to U-turn on attending COP27. We demand that he also U-turns on new oil and gas. This genocidal policy will kill millions of people while failing to address the worst cost of living crisis this country has ever seen.

"“It’s time for a serious windfall tax on big oil, without the get-out-of-jail-free tax credits that will encourage more oil and gas that we cannot afford.

"Vulnerable people will be freezing to death in their homes this winter, unable to afford a can of soup while his Government refuse to tax the rich and the big energy companies that are profiting from our misery. We are not prepared to stand by and watch while everything we love is destroyed.”

Just Stop Oil protesters also blocked nearby Whitehall by gluing their hands to the road today.

The Met Police has been approached for details.

It comes after about a dozen protestors from the anti-oil campaign group were dragged off Harleyford Street, in London, by furious drivers.

The drivers argued with the activists and then took direct action against them, pulling them away and snatching signs from them.

One driver accelerated towards them before stopping while another driver mounted the road to get around them.

The protestors kept returning back into the road after being forcibly moved.

Days earlier Just Stop Oil protestors blocked London's infamous Abbey Road to recreate the iconic pose The Beatles made famous on the cover of their 11th studio album.

At 1pm on Sunday October 23, the group walked onto the crossing in north west London and then sat on the tarmac holding hands.

The road was blocked in both directions, reports My London.

Police went straight to the scene and arrested four activists.

A Met Police spokesman said: "We are aware of Just Stop Oil protesters in Abbey Road, NW8 blocking the road in both directions. Officers are on scene and dealing."

In a later update, the spokesman added: "Both carriageways of Abbey Road are now clear of protestors and traffic is flowing again in both directions.

"Police have arrested four protesters for wilful obstruction of the highway. They have been taken into custody at a Central London police station."
