Double demerits for Anzac Day long-weekend

Double demerits have been introduced for the Anzac Day long-weekend across NSW.

The extra penalties for speeding, seatbelt and mobile-phone offences of the roads kicked-in at the beginning of Friday and will continue until the end of Monday.

It comes only a week after the Easter long-weekend, during which 305 speeding infringements were issued and almost 12,000 random breath tests were conducted across the Hunter region.

Officers in police area commands and police districts across the state will patrol local and regional Anzac Day events to ensure this national day of remembrance is commemorated appropriately, police said in a statement on Friday morning.

Assistant Commissioner Tony Cooke said police were reminding people to be respectful, sensible, and to take responsibility for themselves and others during the commemorations.

"Anzac Day is about honouring the brave men and women who served our country and who paid the ultimate sacrifice in fighting for our freedom," Assistant Commissioner Cooke said.

"Like all major events, we want people to enjoy Anzac Day in a safe and secure environment, without the fear of being subjected to anti-social behaviour or alcohol-related crime.

"Police are encouraging anyone planning to attend one of the many events across the state, to do so safely and in the spirit of comradery and mateship, to look out for one another."
