A recreational fisher rescued a crew member who went overboard from a bulk carrier bound for Newcastle.
The crewman had gone overboard from the Singapore-flagged Double Delight - a 234-metre ship that remained moored in Newcastle on Saturday, November 9 - about 11.30pm Thursday, when the ship was roughly eight kilometres southwest of the local harbour.
The Maritime Safety Authority raised the alarm, and a major search involving seafaring and aerial support was underway on Friday morning.
The crewman was reportedly picked up on a beach near Swansea by a local doctor on a recreational fishing boat at about 6.30pm and has since been taken to John Hunter Hospital, under Border Force surveillance, for medical assessment and treatment of hypothermia.
AMSA tasked the Newcastle-based NSW Water Police and Marine Rescue NSW units, along with the Port Stephens-based Water Police vessel, to help the search effort. The Westpac Rescue Helicopter and a Williamtown search and rescue helicopter were also tasked to assist the effort.
The Maritime Safety Authority has thanked those who assisted.
