Valve has thrown a massive curveball into the competition scene with the release of Dota 2 Patch 7.41, dropping huge gameplay changes right in the middle of ESL One Birmingham 2026. And its headline change is definitely game-changing: Facets have been completely removed.
The latest Dota 2 patch, which was released on March 24 (or 25 depending on your time zone) went live just ahead of day 5 of the group stage at ESL One Birmingham, where 16 of the world’s top teams are battling for a $1 million prize pool. With the major LAN tournament already in full swing, the timing adds chaos as teams scramble to adjust their strategies on short notice.

At the time of the update, Team Yandex were leading Group A with a 4-2-0 win-draw-loss record, while Aurora Gaming topped Group B with an impressive 5-1-0 run. With standings still tight, the removal of Facets and implementation of other gameplay changes could significantly shake up how the rest of the event plays out.
Facets were introduced alongside Innate abilities in Dota 2 Patch 7.36 in May 2024, and they quickly became a core feature. By giving players meaningful choices before matches even started, Facets added another layer of strategy to hero picks and playstyles.
But over time, the system proved difficult to balance. Some Facets were rarely picked, while others became staples that shaped the meta. A good example is Faceless Void’s Time Zone, which offered an alternative to the traditional Chronosphere by enabling more teamfight-oriented abilities.
While Facets added depth, they also introduced more complexity to a game already packed with systems. Their removal suggests Valve may be looking to simplify gameplay and reduce the long-term balancing burden, especially in a competitive setting where balance is crucial.
Dota 2 community split over Facets’ removal

Some players welcomed the change, arguing that Facets made the game overly complex and harder to balance. On the Dota 2 Reddit forum, one player felt that the game has been experiencing feature creep over time, pointing to systems like Talents, Neutral Items, Innate abilities, and multiple map objectives. “For Facets, I always thought it was too much and also unnecessary addition that’s impossible to balance,” the player said.
Another one pointed out how overwhelming Facets could be, especially for new players, saying that “Dota 2 does not need this mechanic, and will be in a healthier place without it.”
However, other players believe removing Facets strips away depth and creativity from the game. “I can understand that facets were time-consuming and difficult to balance and made their work more difficult, but they were also one of the most interesting things they had done in years,” one player said.
Dota 2 Innate ability changes, Refresher Orb nerf, and new items
Dota 2 Patch 7.41 doesn’t stop at Facets, as Valve also introduced big adjustments to Innate abilities. Innates that previously scaled with other abilities no longer do so. Instead, they now provide fixed bonuses or scale independently per level.
Another major gameplay shift comes from a nerf to Refresher Orb, which no longer refreshes item cooldowns. This effectively removes strategies like double Black King Bar activations, impacting late-game decision-making for core heroes, especially in pro scene and ranked matches.
Dota 2 Patch 7.41 also introduces a wide range of new items that could reshape builds across multiple roles. Early-game options now include Chasm Stone, which boosts area of effect, Shawl for magic resistance, Splintmail for armor, and Wizard Hat for mana increase.
On the higher end, Consecrated Wraps provides a mix of survivability and utility through its stacking damage barrier mechanic. Crella’s Crozier brings a powerful ghost form active that trades physical immunity for increased magic vulnerability, while also draining movement speed from nearby enemies and converting reduced healing into self-sustain.
Support players also gain access to Essence Distiller, a versatile item that can heal allies, damage enemies over time, and provide vision control depending on how it’s used. Meanwhile, Specialist’s Array and Hydra’s Breath are potent options for carries, especially for ranged heroes.
Hero buffs and nerfs, item changes, map tweaks, neutral creep adjustments, and more are included in the update. You can check all the changes in the full Dota 2 7.41 patch notes.
