Doorbell footage shows man 'dumping his whole life' in street blighted by students

Shocking video footage shows a man brazenly dumping bedding on the street outside a house in an area that has been blighted by problems as students leave for the summer.

The footage was captured by a Nest doorbell on a house in Granville Road in the Picton area of Wavertree, which is a part of the city that is rife with student housing.

In recent days, those living in the streets between Lawrence Road and Smithdown Road have experienced shocking levels of fly-tipping and waste dumping as students move out of their properties and head home for the summer.

Today the ECHO published a story highlighting some of the mess left behind and the frustrations of local residents who feel their community has been hit hard by the proliferation of cramped, shared houses and the thoughtless actions of those living in them and the landlords who own them.

The footage from Granville Road is the latest incident that appears to show the careless actions of some of those moving out from the area.

It shows a man casually walking along Granville Road carrying what appears to be a large pile of bedding, when he is outside the neighbour's house, he drops the bedding on the pavement.

At this point he quickly walks away down the street, glancing around as he does.

Sharing the video, the resident of the house said: "This is what we have to put up with on a daily basis. Student moving out doesn't want his bedding anymore. Put it in a bin maybe? Nah just place it outside someone's house.

"I put it in a bin along with all the rest of the stuff he left. It's beyond comprehension that he even considered this was an option. The bin is just out of shot on the left."

Asked if the man leaving the items lives in the same street, he answered: "He did. He left yesterday hence dumping his whole life. Found some kitchen equipment under cars today. You can't make this stuff up anymore. There needs to be a societal change for this to happen. They're gone, they don't care, they don't see it."

Recent weeks have seen the problems in this area of Wavertree come to a head, with local people pushed to breaking point.

Ashley Hargreaves lives in the nearby Blantyre Street. He said: "The level of rubbish this week is something I have never seen before.

"They have left clothes and all other household items on the street and then the cleaners who are hired to clean the properties left their own rubbish in the street as well. This has attracted rats and seagulls to the area, it sounds like the seaside here."

Ashley says he has raised around a dozen complaints with the city council and has helped to arrange community meetings with local councillors, but feels not enough is being done. He has also taken matters into his own hands at times.

"I now personally sweep the street on a weekly basis to try and keep it at a reasonable level," he explains. "I've also attempted to speak to some of the students on my road about this but have been verbally abused and had doors slammed in my face when raising these issues. They just don't care and there are no ramifications for them or the landlords involved."
