Andy Burnham may have emerged from his first face-to-face meeting with Donald Trump without a major diplomatic clash, but his body appeared to reveal just how much pressure he was under.
The British prime minister met the US president on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly in New York. Their talks came against a difficult political backdrop, with disagreements over the Chagos Islands, artificial intelligence regulation and international conflicts threatening to complicate the relationship.
While Donald Trump publicly praised Burnham as a “natural businessperson,” body language expert Judi James believed the two leaders projected sharply different styles of power during the meeting.
In an exclusive analysis for The Sun, James compared Burnham’s posture to that of “a pilot about to eject from a plane.”
Donald Trump adopted his familiar ‘alpha’ posture
James said Trump appeared comfortable occupying space as he sat beside the British leader. His knees were spread apart and his hands formed a downward-pointing steeple, gestures she interpreted as part of his established “hunched alpha” pose.
Burnham presented a noticeable contrast. Rather than expanding his posture, James said, the prime minister appeared to make himself physically smaller by leaning into a restrained crouch.

That difference shaped the visual tone of the meeting. Trump seemed settled and dominant, while Burnham’s posture suggested he was carefully managing an unfamiliar and potentially unpredictable encounter.
Body language readings are subjective and cannot conclusively establish what a person is thinking. James’ assessment nevertheless offered a striking interpretation of the pressure surrounding Burnham’s first in-person talks with Trump.

The clearest signs of unease, according to James, came from Burnham’s hands. She pointed to his tightly intertwined fingers, which he held together in what she described as a protective clasp. In her assessment, the gesture indicated tension and anxiety rather than confidence.
