The congressional hearing into the Capitol Hill riots is a reminder of the carnage caused by Donald Trump ’s dangerous brand of populism.
The former president stands accused of an “attempted coup” when he whipped up his supporters to storm the bastion of American democracy in the wake of his election defeat.
You would have hoped that this outrageous act would have conclusively ended Trump’s political career. Unfortunately, his poisonous and irresponsible brand of politics continues to pollute the Republican Party.
Leading Republicans still refuse to condemn Trump or challenge his false assertion the presidential election was rigged.
By failing to side with truth and decency they have let this myth take hold among a wider audience so it threatens to cause permanent damage to the democratic system.
Britain should heed the lessons. This is the slippery slope you slide down if you indulge a political leader with no regard for the truth and no respect for standards or decency.
Ban killer pets
Ten-year-old Jack Lis was described as the “sweetest of boys” with a bright future ahead of him.
He was mauled to death by a dog called Beast, whose owners were jailed today.
Seeing them jailed will offer consolation to Jack’s family, but they right ask why more has not been done to prevent this happening again. When six people, including four children under four, have been killed by dogs this year it is obvious the law is not good enough.
The Daily Mirror is demanding tough new laws to clamp down dangerous dogs.
How many more innocent lives need to be lost before ministers wake up to this menace?
