Chronically online 78-year-old and US presidential candidate Donald Trump has revealed his thoughts on music superstar Taylor Swift in a post online. By total coincidence, yet another attempt was made on his life merely hours later.
Five days after his first debate against Democrat nominee Kamala Harris, the former president took to his right-wing social media platform Truth Social on Sunday (local time) to make another all-caps post: “I HATE TAYLOR SWIFT.”
However, these four words — which were penned in many a diary when Swift began dating Harry Styles in 2012 — did not have anything to do with Trump’s thoughts on the “Shake It Off” singer’s new album, or his failure to get Eras Tour tickets.
The reason of course for the Republican candidate/convicted felon’s gripe against Tay is that as soon as the most recent debate finished airing, she publicly endorsed Kamala Harris as the next US president.
“I will be casting my vote for Kamala Harris and Tim Walz in the 2024 Presidential Election,” Taylor Swift announced in a post featuring her holding her cat.
By a total coincidence, hours after the post was made, a lone gunman was taken into custody by the FBI after an alleged attempt to shoot the former president at his golf home in Florida. Though more is being discovered about the gunman by the hour, the alleged assassination attempt has no link to Swift, other than poor timing.
In response to Trump’s Tay-hate, political and public figures alike have begun commenting on the overall bizarreness of the state of US politics, with one punter calling out how there is “nothing normal” about the situation.

Meanwhile, former congresswoman Liz Cheney took to X (formerly Twitter) to share her thoughts on Trump’s latest post by using a cheeky Swift song title. Usually I’m against such behaviour, but in this instance I’ll let it slide.
“Says the smallest man who ever lived,” Cheney wrote.

Due to her immense popularity, an endorsement from Tay does have a measurable impact on the outcome of the upcoming US election.
While only 67 million Americans tuned in to the recent debate, approximately 146 million Americans are Swifties. Aside from the fact she’s still one year too young, Taylor Swift could win a US presidential election in a landslide if she ran.
With tens of millions of fans in the US who will be voting soon, due to the incredible loyalty Swift’s fans have for her, this endorsement is not like ones from other celebrities.
Notably, Swift did not take a stance on either candidate during the 2016 US Election, where Trump ended up winning against Hillary Clinton. In 2020, the musician broke from her political silence to share an endorsement for Joe Biden, who proceeded to beat Trump in the election.

So while Swift’s choice of candidate does not come as a surprise, it still clearly infuriated Trump to the point where he took to the internet to have a cringey whinge.
It’s also an especially wild outcome when you remember that just a month ago Trump was under fire for using an AI-generated photo of Swift giving her support to him, in a bizarre attempt to drum up more support.
At the end of the day, it all goes to show that no matter how powerful your political office is, you’ll always have to answer to the Queen… Tay.
