The US Mint has sparked a storm of criticism by selling a gold-coloured $1 coin featuring Donald Trump for more than 1.5 times its face value, with social media users allegedly branding the official product a 'scam'.

Orders for the coin opened at noon Eastern time on Wednesday 2 September, with the US Mint selling the collector product directly to the public in two formats: 100-coin bags priced at $154.50 and 25-coin rolls at $61. The coin will not enter everyday circulation.
