CNN and Politico reporters could not enter the White House under President Donald Trump’s newly announced media ban. Yet when Melania Trump held her own event in New York, both organisations were allowed through the door.
The Office of the First Lady approved credentials for CNN and Politico to cover “Fostering the Future Together,” an event held alongside the United Nations General Assembly on September 22. The decision created an unusual contrast within the Trump administration: two organisations barred from covering the president at the White House were cleared to report on the first lady.
According to USA Today, which reported the development, CNN received confirmation of its credential on the evening of September 20, one day after the president’s restrictions took effect.

Melania Trump media invite was reportedly her office’s decision
Melania Trump knew about the White House restrictions, CNN reported. Her office, however, had the authority to choose which journalists could attend her UNGA event.
That discretion allowed CNN and Politico to receive credentials even though Trump had banned them from White House grounds. MS NOW, the third outlet targeted by the president, was not identified by USA Today as having received access to the event.
The White House did not respond to the publication’s request for an explanation of how the first lady’s decision fit with the president’s directive.
The Melania Trump media invite did not formally reverse or weaken the White House ban. It applied only to her event in New York. Still, the competing access decisions offered a rare glimpse of different media strategies operating within the same administration.
What prompted the Donald Trump media ban?
Trump announced on Sept. 18 that CNN, Politico and MS NOW would be excluded from the White House, accusing the organisations of repeatedly publishing what he called “fake news.”
The president said the restrictions would take effect immediately and suggested more news organisations could be added later. He argued that although the outlets remained free to publish critical stories, he was not required to provide them access to the White House.
The ban affected more than seats at briefings. Reporters from the organisations had their White House passes deactivated, limiting their ability to question administration officials in person and observe events unavailable to the broader public.
CNN is also part of the rotating television pool that records presidential events and shares the footage with other broadcasters. After CNN was excluded, the remaining major networks suspended normal pool coverage in solidarity.
CNN, Politico and MS NOW take Trump to court
The three organisations responded by suing Trump and other administration officials in federal court. Their lawsuit argues that the outlets were punished because the President disliked their reporting, amounting to unconstitutional viewpoint discrimination. They are asking the court to block the ban and restore their access.
The administration maintains that entry to the White House is a privilege rather than an automatic right. Justice Department lawyers have also alleged that the outlets failed to meet journalistic standards and created national security concerns through their reporting of sensitive information.
Trump did not publicly provide evidence supporting the national security accusation when defending the ban, Reuters reported. The case was assigned to US District Judge Timothy Kelly, who was appointed by Trump and previously handled the 2018 dispute over CNN correspondent Jim Acosta’s press pass.
Trump confronted CNN at the United Nations
The contradiction became more visible when Trump encountered CNN anchor Kaitlan Collins at the UN.
“I’m surprised that CNN is here covering me,” Trump told her, according to video cited by USA Today. He repeatedly said she should not be there.
Collins later explained that the United Nations, not the White House, had credentialed CNN to cover the General Assembly. Trump’s restrictions applied to White House access and did not give his administration control over UN press credentials.
