Photographs of hand bruises on President Donald Trump in North Carolina on 16 September and Senator Mitch McConnell on his return to Capitol Hill have renewed scrutiny of their health and what their offices have disclosed.

Trump's recurring bruising had already prompted explanations from the White House, while McConnell was recovering from a fall that had kept him away from the Senate.
