As the weather warms and our attention turns to outdoor hosting, it can be tempting to skip the maintenance and head straight for the grill.
However, before you start serving friends and family in the sunshine, experts recommend performing a simple water-beading test on any outdoor kitchen with wooden countertops. It’s a quick check that can reveal a lot about the condition of your surfaces before prep begins.
Here’s how the water test works to tell if your counters need re-oiling, and the other subtle warning signs to look for before hosting a crowd this summer.
How to Use The Water Bead Test on Wooden Countertops
While you should consider oiling wooden countertops yearly anyway, the waterdrop test can help you determine if your counters are in dire need of maintenance before hosting. Allow them to dry out too much, and you will start to see structural damage such as cracks, splinters, and warping, and the surface will be more prone to stains.
Tasmin Holland, kitchen product development manager at Paula Rosa Kitchens, explains, 'Outdoor timber has to deal with direct sunlight, rain, changing temperatures, and moisture in the air, so the protective finish can break down faster.
'A good habit to get into is to check wooden worktops before the warmer months, especially if it’s an outdoor kitchen that is about to be used for those weekend BBQs.'
To this properly, she recommends:
- Clean the kitchen and countertops thoroughly, then let them dry completely.
- Sprinkle a few drops of water across the surface.
- If the droplets bead on the surface, the protective finish is still intact. If the moisture lies flat or soaks in quickly, it’s a clear sign that the wood needs re-oiling before heavy use begins.
- Different timbers will vary slightly, but the same general rule applies, she notes.
Tasmin adds, 'It’s much easier to keep on top of it little and often than to rescue a worktop once the wood has dried out or started to stain.'
What Else to Look For

While the water test is a helpful first step in determining whether your outdoor kitchen counters need re-oiling, Tasmin recommends pairing it with a quick visual check.
'While beading water is a sign of a healthy seal, I always advise homeowners to look for subtle changes in texture,' she explains. 'If the timber starts to feel dry or rough, or appears patchy in high-use prep zones, the finish is likely wearing thin, regardless of how the water reacts.'
How you clean your outdoor kitchen can also affect it. Avoid overly astringent or harsh cleaning products, as these can strip away the protective oil coating and leave the wood dry and vulnerable over time.
