Domino's giving away free pizza to football fans who arrive with a rival

Almost a third of football fans admit to yellow carding their family and mates and some football feuds get so heated that over half would bench a rival fan for a few days and one in 10 would even give them the silent treatment for a few months.

Now Domino’s is bringing fans from both sides together, encouraging them to ‘break bread’ ahead of the final between Chelsea and Liverpool by introducing the Store of Two Halves in the heart of Wembley.

The Domino’s store (418 High Road) will be giving away free pizza on Saturday, May 14, between 11am and 2pm, to fans who come with a rival team supporter – with each pair kitted out in their different teams’ football shirt.

The Store of Two Halves has been specially built to bring fans together on one of the biggest days in the football calendar. While the research shows that over half of football fans name pizza as their go-to match day meal, currently 1 in 10 would refuse to share one with a friend or family member who supports a rival team. The Store of Two Halves seeks to unite fans through the universal love of the beautiful game and a piping hot slice of pizza.

Domino’s polled 2,000 Brits, finding that the love for football is so strong that almost half of football fans would cancel on pre-organised plans and over a third would call in sick at work so they can watch their beloved football team.

When it comes to choosing their own ‘team’, a quarter consider having a vested football interest as important when making new mates. For some, the love of the beautiful game is even bigger than the real thing, with one in 20 confessing they wouldn’t consider dating someone who didn’t support the same squad as them.

Melanie Howe, Pizza Pundit, at Domino’s said, “As a nation of football fanatics, we know temperatures can run high on such a big day in the football calendar. So, we wanted to create a neutral space for rival fans to come together– because what better way to call a pre-game truce than over a delicious piping hot slice of pizza?!”

According to the research, fans of Chelsea and Liverpool are just as conflicted when it comes to their favoured pizza choice too, Chelsea fans choose Pepperoni as their top pick compared to Liverpool fans who’d go for a full-on Meaty Combo.

Domino’s is busy gearing up for a big boost of pizza orders, as last year for the same match, there was a sales surge of over 280,000 orders on the day, with sales during the last half of the match (6-7pm) hitting record highs with 1,770 pizzas sold every minute.
