Dominic Cummings wants Boris Johnson marched out of No10 by police as Tories demand he goes today

Tories are demanding Boris Johnson leave No10 immediately rather than stay on as caretaker Prime Minister - as Dominic Cummings called on police to "escort him from the building" today.

The Prime Minister is expected to announce his resignation imminently after being deserted by his party, with more than 50 ministers resigning since Tuesday night.

But he appears to be planning to stay on as caretaker Prime Minister until the autumn, with a No10 official saying he will shortly make new appointments to his ministerial team.

Embittered ex-aide Mr Cummings said letting Mr Johnson stay on as caretaker would cause "carnage" and told the Cabinet to order him to leave today.

He tweeted: "Cabinet ministers shd talk to Brady this a.m, agree Raab as interim PM, then speak to Cabinet Secretary and get him to fix with Palace...

"Tell [PM] you either resign and leave today or the Queen will dismiss, appoint Raab, & cops escort you from building. [PM] will fold Game over."

He added: "Evict TODAY or he'll cause CARNAGE, even now he's playing for time & will try to stay. No 'dignity', no 'interim while leadership contest'. Raab shd be interim PM by evening."

Mr Johnson's departure will trigger a Conservative leadership contest, which could run for weeks over the summer.

The format of the contest is in the hands of the Tory backbench 1922 Committee, who set the rules.

Theresa May stayed on as PM while the contest to appoint her successor was run in 2019.

But some Tories expressed concern about Mr Johnson staying on, as Ms May was forced to quit over Brexit whereas Mr Johnson is facing criticism on all sides over sleaze, lies and chaos.

George Freeman, who quit as science minister today, tweeted: “ Boris Johnson needs to hand in the seals of office, apologise to Her Majesty & advise her to call for a Caretaker Prime Minister to take over today."

Tory Bim Afolami tweeted his comments, adding: "Agree".

Ex-schools minister Nick Gibb said: “As well as resigning as Party leader the PM must resign his office.

“After losing so many ministers, he has lost the trust and authority required to continue. We need an acting PM who is not a candidate for leader to stabilise the government while a new leader is elected.”

Former Brexit Minister Lord Frost, who was a close ally of the PM, agreed that Mr Johnson “cannot now credibly be a caretaker Prime Minister while a leadership election is taking place”.
