Dolphins WR Jaylen Waddle in concussion protocol going into Broncos game

Miami Dolphins wide receiver Jaylen Waddle is in the NFL’s concussion protocol this week ahead of Sunday’s showdown with the Denver Broncos.

Waddle suffered the concussion on a hit from New England Patriots rookie defensive back Marte Mapu in the fourth quarter of Miami’s 24-17 win in Week 2.

Waddle will have to pass through four stages of recovery in the protocol before being cleared to play again. Dolphins coach Mike McDaniel said Monday that Waddle “already started progressing in that process.”

Miami is set to practice on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday before releasing a final injury report with game statuses on Friday afternoon.

If Waddle does not play against Denver on Sunday, ex-Broncos wide receiver River Cracraft would be among the players asked to step up in his absence.

Denver cornerback Pat Surtain will likely be primarily responsible for Tyreek Hill on Sunday, leaving struggling second-year cornerback Damarri Mathis to cover the Dolphins’ No. 2 receiver this weekend.
